Still at Cumberland

13 November 2012 | Cumberland Island
cloudy, showers, warm
We are still anchored off of Cumberland Island, enjoying the peaceful setting and our daily walks ashore. Yesterday we walked the trails through the maritime forests and out the the oceanside beach. Along the way, we not only saw numerous wild horses, but also a threesome of deer. This was the only shot that came out clear.

The live oaks are a sight to behold...some so large they seem to be a tangle of branches shooting off and bending in every direction

The trails from the forest to the beaches are connected by boardwalks, meandering across the salt marshes and dunes.

After a busy day ashore, we invited Lynn and Peter on First Edition over for dinner. I tried out my southern cooking...shrimp and grits. The First Editions live in VA, so Alan thought I was nuts making grits for the first time ever for southerners...I reminded him that they were originally from NJ! They wouldn't know a good grit from a bad grit any more than I would.

Today we went in a different direction...out to the marshes. We read that there are areas that you can find sharks teeth, so we went in search. Talk about looking for a needle in a haystack! But, as luck would have, I was able to spot 3 of them along the stretch of lowtide beach by the marshes. Also spotted what looked like alligator tracks, so I was suddenly in a big hurry to head back to the main trail away from the waters edge.

We will be heading out of here tomorrow morning, making our way towards St. Augustine. We'll probably stop at Pine Island for the night, just 10 miles shy of St. A's. We've reserved a mooring in St. Augustine for 4 nights, Thurs.-Sun, so we'll have plenty of time to see the sights.
