St. Augustine in the Rain

17 November 2012 | St. Augustine, FL
cloudy, rainy, cool
We left Cumberland Island on Wednesday after a miserable night. The wind picked up from the north about 10pm, creating a chop on the water that was very uncomfortable. We had left the dinghy in the water as well, so that slopped around all night...neither one of us getting much sleep. By 7am on Wed, we had the anchor up and headed south...not far however, as it was high tide and we would not be able to get under the bridge at Fernandina for a while. We went the 5 miles to Fernandina, dropped the anchor, picked up the dinghy (it was too rough to do it at Cumberland) and waited for the tide to fall.

We got underway about 10:30, making for a late start to the day, therefor a late finish. We got to Pine Island, about 10 miles north of St. Aug about 5pm. Dropped the anchor and hoped for an early bed, and quiet night. About 7:30 while I was doing dishes, a loud crash and the boat shuddered! What the...We had been rammed into by another boat whose anchor dragged. Very unsettling.

We did have some damage, which will have to be repaired before we head to the bahamas, but not the end of the world...unless you know A... then it's pretty close to the end of the world! We'll likely stop in Fort Pierce for a week or two and get the repairs done there.

Thursday we arrived in St. Augustine, a wonderful stop along the ICW..A historic city, beautiful Spanish architecture, and JP Henleys. Jp Henleys is a pub just across the street from the anchorage with 70!!! beers on draft.

From St Augustine

We plan on being here til Monday, so hopefully the weather will improve so we can really enjoy the city. So far its been too cold to get the bikes out, but decent enough to at least walk about town. Tonight is the Christmas Lighting of the city, and it looks like they have been stringing lights EVERYWHERE! The plan is to head tonight...so I have my fingers crossed that it won't be raining.
