The Weather Rules
20 October 2012 | Duck Island Roads, CLinton,CT
fog,warm,rain,sun
At 0640 we left Newport...no wind, no visibility (fog), and 6-8 foot rollers...not living the dream yet! We were headed into Long Island Sound, via Fisher Island Sound by Watch Hill RI. Just as we approached the entrance to the sound, the fog lifted and the sun started to peek out. As soon as we got behind Fisher Island, the seas were blocked, and we had a great ride through the sound to Duck Island Roads. Our original destination was get about 20 miles further to the Thimbles, a small cluster of islands, but with the weather forecast for this evening, we decided that that was not our best option. So arrived here by 2:30pm and had a restful afternoon.
Our entertainment is usually to listen the the VHF radio. LI Sound is always busy with radio traffic to the Coast Guard. Last night we heard about a girl in the water near the Jamestown bridge in Newport. Today, we heard about a plane crash on the south side of Long Island. A guy in a boat called it into the CG and said the people couldn't get out. So, not sure what happened there...we never hear the endings.
We're hoping to get to the end of the Sound tomorrow, and stage for a transit down the East River and through NYC on Monday.
No pics today, as the fog was pretty thick all morning, and there wasn't much to look at all afternoon!
