Still Playing in the Keys

Since leaving Key West, we have been having a lovely time just wandering around the Keys. The weather in the Keys is, in my opinion, nearly perfect with temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s always with a breeze that keeps it comfortable. Depending on what the winds are doing, we seek out a spot [...]

Living Your Dreams

Greetings Everyone,

This Key Fits

Greeting everyone! We escaped from Key West three days ago after a stay of almost two weeks. I say escaped as we were held captive by howling east winds which turned an intended two day stay into almost two weeks. However, Key West was great and we explored.

It's blowin' in Key West!

After spending Friday at a lovely anchorage in Newfound Harbor off Big Pine Key, we headed out on Saturday morning for Key West. It was a beautiful day and after only about three hours, we arrived at the harbor entrance and tied up to a dock at a marina in Key West. What a busy place! It is easy to see [...]

The middle Keys

Well ! Our goal has been to slow it all down and hang out here and there and not freeze. Happening! A few days ago we anchored at Shell Key early in the afternoon and again set about the arduous tasks of napping then fishing. Julie reeled in a delightful small fish and when she raised it out of the water [...]

Cruising in the Keys

We left Ft Lauderdale on Monday morning early so we could make the 7am opening of the bridge next to the marina and headed out the Port Everglades inlet to the outside as we made our way down to the Keys. It was a sunny day and the sea was fairly calm. As we were passing Miami, we were suddenly joined [...]

Top of the Morning to Everyone!

Lets catch up a bit shall we? We moved from Norfolk to the Atlantic Yacht Basin Marina for a couple of nights and visited some wonderful friends in Virginia Beach. They treated us to a wonderful pot roast dinner with salad with a homemade balsamic vinaigrette and mustard dressing. To die for. Our friends took us around Virginia Beach for provisioning and site seeing. I like Virginia beach. Monday morning we began our journey which led us to an anchorage just north of the Albemarle sound for the night. Departing Tuesday we landed in the Alligator River Marina to top off fuel and to remove all items from the top of the mast as the Wilkerson Bridge awaits us just to the south. The accompanying photo to this entry describes the “view from aloft” from 62 feet above sea level. Wilkerson Bridge is reportedly 64 feet of vertical clearance (maybe less if the wind stacks up water in the river) and our mast is 62 feet without any stuff (i.e., lights, anemometer, antenna) on top. Hence, removing the stuff lessens the excitement. The winds through Thanksgiving are not favorable so we will be staying north of the Wilkerson Bridge until Friday morning. Allow me at this time to acknowledge Captains Mike and Hank who five years ago brought the Oasis Rose from Florida to Maine with me and taught me the ways of the ICW. Thank you Professors!

As always we are going full bore in the galley. Avoiding poultry today to save ourselves for tomorrow, behind me simmers pork with white wine, carrots, onions, and Klondike gold potatoes. We will add fresh cut green beans in the mid afternoon. The one ingredient we realized we had overlooked for our Thanksgiving feast tomorrow was pie. However we just purchased two individual size “Frostingville Carrot Cake” at the convenience store which should suffice.

It is getting warmer which makes it beautiful during the day however the mosquitoes come cruising at dusk and mass at the cockpit cabin door attracted by the lights and carbon dioxide. But we are “one up” on the bugs as we have begun getting in and out of the boat at night in the dark from a forward hatch. So there! my little insect friends.

A Happy Thanksgiving to all! Mr.K
