Still Playing in the Keys

Since leaving Key West, we have been having a lovely time just wandering around the Keys. The weather in the Keys is, in my opinion, nearly perfect with temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s always with a breeze that keeps it comfortable. Depending on what the winds are doing, we seek out a spot [...]

Living Your Dreams

Greetings Everyone,

This Key Fits

Greeting everyone! We escaped from Key West three days ago after a stay of almost two weeks. I say escaped as we were held captive by howling east winds which turned an intended two day stay into almost two weeks. However, Key West was great and we explored.

It's blowin' in Key West!

After spending Friday at a lovely anchorage in Newfound Harbor off Big Pine Key, we headed out on Saturday morning for Key West. It was a beautiful day and after only about three hours, we arrived at the harbor entrance and tied up to a dock at a marina in Key West. What a busy place! It is easy to see [...]

The middle Keys

Well ! Our goal has been to slow it all down and hang out here and there and not freeze. Happening! A few days ago we anchored at Shell Key early in the afternoon and again set about the arduous tasks of napping then fishing. Julie reeled in a delightful small fish and when she raised it out of the water [...]

Cruising in the Keys

We left Ft Lauderdale on Monday morning early so we could make the 7am opening of the bridge next to the marina and headed out the Port Everglades inlet to the outside as we made our way down to the Keys. It was a sunny day and the sea was fairly calm. As we were passing Miami, we were suddenly joined [...]

Norfolk at Last!

Julie
I was beginning to fear we would never get out of Maryland, But we departed Zanhiser's Marina on Solomon's Island on Thursday morning. We stopped for fuel and the skies opened up with a cold, heavy rain. The temperature when we left was 47 degrees and within a couple of hours dropped to 36! The rain lasted until mid afternoon. Marc got drenched at the helm and had to change jackets mid day and add more winter-like apparel (isn't this what we were trying to get away from by going cruising?). Anyway he endured and finally by late afternoon, the sun made an appearance. We realized though that we would not make it to Deltaville before sunset so we opted instead to anchor in Reedville which is located on the eastern shore of Cockrell Creek which is a tributary of the Great Wicomico River. It was a very pretty spot and as we slowly motored in, I spotted a bald eagle fly along the shore to land in a tree. We set anchor just as the sun was setting. After hot showers, we settled in for one of our favorite things, “Taco Night.”

The next morning, the sun was up though the temperature was only 31 degrees! We pulled anchor and left Reedville around 7 am. The temperatures never got higher than the upper 40's but Marc again prevailed at the helm in full winter gear. The winds were good for more than half the day and we were able to power sail for a good part of the day, averaging 9 knots. We made excellent time and reached Norfolk by about 3:30 pm. We are safely anchored off Hospital Point. We plan to celebrate our arrival in Virginia by having some wine and a wonderful dinner of filet mignon cooked on the grill with some fresh vegetables and dirty rice. Tomorrow it is on to the ICW!
