Still Playing in the Keys

Since leaving Key West, we have been having a lovely time just wandering around the Keys. The weather in the Keys is, in my opinion, nearly perfect with temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s always with a breeze that keeps it comfortable. Depending on what the winds are doing, we seek out a spot [...]

Living Your Dreams

Greetings Everyone,

This Key Fits

Greeting everyone! We escaped from Key West three days ago after a stay of almost two weeks. I say escaped as we were held captive by howling east winds which turned an intended two day stay into almost two weeks. However, Key West was great and we explored.

It's blowin' in Key West!

After spending Friday at a lovely anchorage in Newfound Harbor off Big Pine Key, we headed out on Saturday morning for Key West. It was a beautiful day and after only about three hours, we arrived at the harbor entrance and tied up to a dock at a marina in Key West. What a busy place! It is easy to see [...]

The middle Keys

Well ! Our goal has been to slow it all down and hang out here and there and not freeze. Happening! A few days ago we anchored at Shell Key early in the afternoon and again set about the arduous tasks of napping then fishing. Julie reeled in a delightful small fish and when she raised it out of the water [...]

Cruising in the Keys

We left Ft Lauderdale on Monday morning early so we could make the 7am opening of the bridge next to the marina and headed out the Port Everglades inlet to the outside as we made our way down to the Keys. It was a sunny day and the sea was fairly calm. As we were passing Miami, we were suddenly joined [...]

Making Good Progress

Julie
Well we had a wonderful Thanksgiving with a traditional turkey dinner and later in the evening a gathering with some fellow boaters who, like us, found themselves at the Alligator River Marina waiting for the weather to improve. Marc even got to break out his mandolin and jam with Scott, one of the boaters, who had his guitar along. It was a lot of fun! Early the next morning, we all got underway and approached the dreaded Wilkerson Bridge. Holding our breath with eyes on the top of the mast we eased under the bridge without touching though without much room to spare. We were grateful we had removed all the “stuff” from atop the mast! Not too far beyond the bridge, we anchored to take advantage of the warm, sunny day to haul Marc back up the mast to reinstall everything he had taken off. We are continuing south and the ICW is an interesting mix of narrow waters known as land cuts where it is easy to see why the ICW is referred to as“the ditch” to wider rivers and sounds peppered with bridges, both fixed and opening. We have been blessed with sunny days and warmer temperatures (low 70s) as we head south. The water has changed from the brackish tea color back to blue and we now often see dolphins swimming alongside the boat. We are also now in the land of the pelican and we have seen them fly in groups near the boat, flying just barely above the water. The picture featured is one I found rather funny of these poor guys trying to catch some fish while a group of pelicans float all around the boat just waiting for them to pull up their catch to see if they can snatch it away! On Sunday night, we tied up to a dock in Swansboro, NC and today we are making our way to Wrightsville Beach where we will again find a marina to tie up so that we can provision and wait out the unsettled weather that is predicted for tomorrow.
