Visitors!

Around five pm, NSA played host to a Pacific Whiteside Dolphin convention. We saw hundreds f these amazing, curious animals over the course of four hours. They appeared from virtually every point of the compass to play around the bow. Steve hung his head over the side for an hour making eye contact, [...]

Still chugging along

171 to go.

Good morning

292 to go. Slowly motoring to conserve fuel, though I suspect we'll have more tan enough breeze once it turns on again. Very quiet here. Steve and Tim are racked out, radar is keeping a vigil, and I go topside to stare into the fog every 10 minutes or so, until the slatting mainsail makes me nuts. [...]

Ruminations with 380 to go

If you're tempted to offer God a small prayer for a "bit of breeze" to help you escape thee Pacific High, it pays to remember that He shops at Costco. You'll get your breeze in bulk.

This is like purgatory

As hate missions go, this one is beginning to top the list. For the past three days we've been sailing hard on the wind into a short, steep sea state from hell. The wind is out of 025-030, IOW directly where we want to go. Making any northing above 35N has been all but impossible on port tack, and starboard takes us further west. Hell, we tried it and were only making 2.9 kts over the ground. So we're now motor-sailing on the wind, bearing 091M. Our goal right now is too see how high we cross the 140 meridian. From there we're aiming at 130, and that's where we figure that we'll find out where we're going to make landfall. Unless conditions change drastically, SF is out of the question. If we're lucky we'll be able to lay Morro Bay.

We have 12-14 kts of wind and a 20 kt sea state. I can't tell you how much this sucks.
