Standing watch (2-4). Winds in the high 20's; just saw 30.5, and boat is making 8kts. We've had to go off course to keep moving without jibing the boat. I expect we'll do that first thing. It's already light outside and it appears that we may have another pretty day (only the 2nd one...no sun screen issues).
Some of you may be seeing this photo for the second time, but wanted to get it posted on the blog. It has an "at sea" feel to it....don't ya think?
It's too bad I'm not collecting audio snapshots also. Right now, and most nights, there is a cacophony of sounds......the water rushing by, the wind howling, the shrouds moaning, the dishes rattle-ling, the floorboards squeaking, the occasional wave exploding, the sails flogging, and the crew SNORING!! It is the symphony of passagemaking!
I am SO happy about Abby being OK. I'm not a frequent letter-writer, but I may send her one. She is one brave little girl. It'll be interesting to see where she shows up next.
We saw a sailboat yesterday. Unfortunately, it was a visual pick up...didn't show on the radar (disconcerting). We tried to make contact, but were not successful. He was about two miles off our starboard bow, and headed in the opposite direction. He was relatively small, and appeared to be gaffed rigged. (wow...just took a big wave broadside....impressive!). Anyway, we suspect he was probably made out of wood. The amazing thing is the direction he was heading....right into big swells, winds plus 20, and a small current against him....talk about tough optimism! There are some tough buggers out here (not us).
About time to crawl back into my cocoon...it's been nice chatting with you.
Stay tuned.
