St. Kitts
12 June 2013 | Caribbean
I've had a great time here,in St. Kitts. The locals are very friendly, and there seems to be Reggae music playing, where ever I go. The real Caribbean!
The supermarkets are good for provisioning too. And the rum and beer are affordable. My friends on Fair Winds, Sherman and Judy, have all but completed the replacement of their engine. Big job.
The island is pretty cool. More lush than the others I passed sailing down here. The Fort Brimstone was great to see. And it has been magnificently restored.
It was built by slaves, primarily to protect the sugar industry, controlled by about 18 families.
Sitting here in the cockpit, and the song Caribbean Blue, by Enya, is playing on the local radio station.
It reminds me of a time, when I was a young boy, and my Dad used to take me down to the Royal Cape Yacht Club, in Cape Town, South Africa, to look at the sail boats.
I've dreamed of sailing these waters for many a year and now I'm doing it. I consider myself to be very fortunate. And it's great to have those memories.
Over the last 2 weeks, since arriving here in St. Kitts, I've been pottering around the boat, Oiling teak, in and out, scrubbing and cleaning and just a bit of ongoing maintenance.
The bottom of Golightly is going to have to be cleaned here, before I sail out, as this marina is a cesspool. There is a 12 inch algae growth already. And don't think I'll get into this water. Luperon, in the Dominican Republic, was cleaner than this here.
Hopefully, there will be a break in the weather mid to late next week, Fair Wind's engine will be running smoothly, and we will be heading off to Dominica, or even further south, towards Grenada, and out of the hurricane belt.
