US rower begins final 1,500 mile journey to New York

MIAMI, FLORIDA - Victor Mooney of Queens, New York departed Sea Isle Marina early this morning and is hoping to reach home within sixty days. Mooney's ocean rowboat, the Spirit of Malabo, arrived in Miami for emergency repair aboard a cargo ship in February.

Mooney was robbed off the coast Haiti, after successfully rowing across the Atlantic Ocean in honor of his brother who died of AIDS and to encourage voluntary HIV testing. Mooney departed from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, which is located off the coast of Africa, arrived in St. Martin (FWI) - a hundred and thirty days later and made stops in British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic.
