Waiting out the wind
11 June 2008 | Nasasobu Harbor, Fiji

We are harbored in a cyclone hole waiting out the winds of about 25 knots for a few days. The rain has kept the crew of the 3 anchored yachts on board for the morning. This harbor is the home of the Pickering and Smith families who have extended to us their hospitality and friendship. We have snorkeled, hiked and broke bread with them and will be enjoying a round of Kava tonight. Sharing with all is the Fijian way. The reef took a hit from the cyclone which hit last year. It is coming back and the fish are still around so we enjoyed an afternoon on the reef. Ancient petroglyphs can be seen near the water fall behind the village. Origins of these strange designs and graphics are not known to the villagers. My visiting nephew, Mike, enjoyed a round of dominoes which lasted 5 hours on the neighboring boat. Tonight we are hosting pork curry night and the main ingredient will be wild pig, killed yesterday by Mike and the village men. The adventure continues next week when we explore the reefs of the Somosomo Straits.
