Makongai reserve

We have had 2 great days here, and did a sevu sevu (karva ceremnony)of sorts. The island used to be a leper colony hospital, and is now a marine reserve, and nursery for turtles and giant clams.

They have some original equipment stiil in use, including a 1910 generator (pictured).

We spent today snorkelling, and diving on a bommie near the boats.

Later in the afternoon, Christian and I took two dinghies offshore to a reef break we had seen on our way in.

The break was surprisingly good, and not too shallow Mark!

We took turns surfing. probably 3 miles from anywhere. Crystal waters and incredible corals beneath.

Flat calm wind conditions, and an angry sky. Truely a pinch yourself moment.

Our heroic session was prematurely shortened, by the sight of 2 or 3 massive 2 foot reef sharks looking for dinner.
