Cloudbreak

01 September 2015 | 17 45.39'S:177 23.21'E, Fiji
Bucket list item checked off today, but I am no Kelly SLater it seems.

We hired a boat and went to Cloudbreak, first thing this morning. We had originally intended to surf Namotu Lefts, as it was more appropriate for our limited skill set. Typically, the surf had dropped a lot overnight, and now Cloudbreak was the only wave working.

The photo makes it look small, and by cloudbreak standards it was , but overhead is big enough for me..

The wave is fast. really fast, and it breaks on to the reef hard - depths are under 1 metre in lots of spots.

For the first hour or 2 (with close to 40 people out) it would be safe to say that I did a lot of paddling and dodging.

Got a few waves on hour 3. Then after that, wondered why the crowds were thinning out. After nearly going over the falls on a wave into a lowering tide fringed reef, I understood why..

The afternoon was spent helping Brad out with his moth setup, and teaching foilboarding.

Brad has a great job as deck captain for a Super yacht Tender. This thing carries 200 000 litres of fuel, and makes 10000 litres of water per day. It also has the coolest Helicopter, Ribs , you name it; all to support the main boat-er Ship. They have also recently acquired a moth, which looks pretty schmickl amongst all of the other toys.

The foilboard coaching utilised their smallest Rib, 300 hp pulls pretty well.

Sleep well tonight as usual.
