February 9, 2011 Little Farmer’s Cay
W left Black Point Monday (February 7) morning and motored to Little Farmer’s Cay (not very far). Could not sail as the wind was on our nose. This Cay is accessed from the south, through a very narrow deep water pass, or via a shallow draft entrance from the north. We chose the former, preferring deeper water, but it was a bit disconcerting to be running so close to the rough shore line. We rounded the south point and picked up one of Ocean Cabin’s moorings after speaking with Terry Bain, a descendant of the original freed slave woman who owned the island. It is home to about 70 people and those we met are very nice and welcoming. We arrived after the First Friday in February Festival on Little Farmer’s Cay (the “Five Fs”), which we avoided because of the crowds (they had 117 boats in here!), so people were still recuperating.
We have enjoyed snorkeling, swimming, beach combing, exploring the heights, and other attributes, but especially the incredibly clear, warm water. On our trip around the area in the dinghy, we saw a big osprey sitting in the "blossom" shoot of a sisal plant. No need for wetsuits here (unless one is planning an extended sat in the water). We dined last night on lobster a la Ocean Cabin and a “florescent blue” Ocean Cabin rum drink. At dinner were the crews of Gratitude, Sanity II, First Draft (Peter and Candy whom we had met last year in the Abacos), and Serenity (Moe and Polly, who have sold everything and are cruising now). A nice evening, but a dark dinghy ride home.
Sanity II was going to leave today but Dave thought the winds were stronger in the wrong direction than he wanted to deal with so they stayed another day, planning to depart tomorrow when the winds shift to the south. We and First Draft IV are heading to Lee Stocking Island for a few days. More later.
