Learning the Ropes

Everyone knows that sailors have to "learn the ropes". If you cannot tell a spinnaker lazy guy from a t'gallant brace then you won't get very far. However, it never fails to surprise me how many ropes, lines, sheets and warps that even a relatively simple sloop like Grey Dove carries. This lot (fresh from the laundry!) does not even include the main and genoa sheets, topping lift, stays'l halliard, barbour hauls and spare spinnaker sheets and guys.
I reckon that GD's collection of lines weighs about the same as the first mate. Given the constant battle against overloading the boat.........;wife - ropes - wife - ropes - hmmm? Can't sail without the ropes.......
