Day One on the Atlantic
28 April 2017
Our first twenty four hours out to sea would not be our finest, but we learned a great deal and had tons of fun with the dolphin. We have several videos of them chasing us or vice versa. They are so playful....like little children one outdoing the other. One poor guy was racing in front of the boat and did a leap like Flipper and hit his head on the bow sprit. We didn't see him again after that......we hope he was okay.
Speaking of getting hit in the head, one of my less than finer moments was when we had jibed and Greg was outside the cockpit working on the lines when I jibed yet again sending the boom over sharply. Lucky for us I did not lose Greg in that moment. It was not the boom that got him, but the line he was messing with caught his ear and burned it pretty good. I was busy watching a ship on our charplotter and not paying attention to the wind direction. Lesson learned!
We motored most all of the day with rolling waves (not nearly like Frying Pan Shoals), enough that is was not comfortable to be downstairs for too long. Between sailing and motor sailing, we were determined to maintain six knots. During the day that called for more motor, but at night the wind came howling in and Greg was reefing the headsail and we were flying. We had a few tense moments as with the night comes the dark and you literally are trusting your instruments to be your eyes.
And another morning comes with less than ten knots of wind.
