Guapa: Beauty and the Sea

One family and their boat. A daydream, a vision and now, slowly, becoming reality.

First trip to check on the boat in nearly three months - what would I find, how would she be?

At first sight, I must admit to being a bit underwhelmed. Is this it? Not much progress since my last report. But... new engine and prop have arrived and Guapa's almost ready to go into the shed for her topside re-spray. Alwgrip's finest.

She should be in the shed as I write this and her new engine should be fitted. I looked over the rusting hulk of our previous engine - not a pretty sight. Replacement was well overdue. Just removed the raw water pump I had fitted the year before last - at some expense. Standard Jabsco pump. Might come in handy at some point in the future; and if not, there's always eBay.

I think the new engine and the new feathering prop (Darglow Featherstream) are going to change our sailing experience completely. No longer will we break down where no-one has broken down before and the new prop should be good for another knot at least.

Going back for a further check towards the end of the week - I hope to be able to post some pictures then. She's going to be so pretty when she's done.
Also want another (final!) word about the rigging and will be off in search of a possible berth come end of May.

I've got a good feeling about the boat; the first sail (of many) of 2010 can't be far off.
