Travel to Tashmoo Lake

We departed Marblehead and motor sailed to Plymouth, MA. As we were sailing past Boston and down the coast, we couldn't help but notice the haze. Then, when we were anchoring, we saw this incredible SUN. This is not your typical "red sky at night, as sailor's delight". It looked more like a rising full [...]

Marblehead

As I mentioned, Marblehead has become one of our favorite cruising destinations this year. We arrived Saturday) of their big "Race Week". We knew it was going to be crowded and we also new that it was going to be rainy on Sunday. So, we dropped the DINGHY in the water, mounted the engine, changed our [...]

Isle of Shoals

So, we left Maine today (sniff). We spent our last night in Isle of Shoals. It's a wonderful little atoll about 10 miles off the coast. A couple of the islands are in Maine and a couple of the islands are in NEW HAMPSHIRE!

This Ole Boat

Old is a relative term. Twenty eight years old doesn't sound too bad by my standards, but for a sailboat that has spent its 28 years in the corrosive environment of salt water, 28 years is older than dirt! Everything metallic (think engine, transmission, mast, cooktop, oven etc, etc) is subject to corrosion [...]

Trolls

for the love of ice cream

07 July 2017
The town of Castine (home to the Maine Maritime Academy) sits on the north shore of the Bagaduce river which according to the waterway guide is quite hazardous to cross in a small craft such as a dinghy due to its swift current. Boat owners are urged to anchor on the north side but when we came in there was no room on that side and we had to anchor in Smith Cove to the south. We crossed the river in our stout dinghy pushed by 5 horses from our trusty Mercury (I KNOW!!!) and spent the day exploring this fine town. As we returned to the dinghy dock, all the girls (Laurie and Elaine) could talk about was getting an ice cream from a small shop nearby which turned out to be closed. Oh well, on to the boat for dinner. While Laurie was preparing dinner, I prepared the boat and the dinghy for our trip the following day. There are always a ton of things to do like securing the lines, moving the dinghy fuel tank onto the deck, sail covers etc. Well, dinner was fine and we were sitting on the boat chewing the fat when the girls brought up the ice cream idea again! It was 8:15pm and the local bar in town served desert until 9:00 pm. If we took off IMMEDIATELY we could cross the Bagaduce river and make it to the bar in time. We all jumped into high gear - find a wallet, find the dinghy key, get coats (yes coats!), make sure we had a light since it was close to dark etc. We moved swiftly and within minutes the three of us were flying across the river in the dinghy when the engine abruptly shutdown! OMG!! What the hell has happened? Oh yeah, I moved the fuel tank onto the boat and now we have no fuel! We had been running on what was in the carburetor and fuel lines. Damn!! Get the oars out and pull like hell for the boat before the current pulls us out of the harbor! Now, if you know anything about rowing, you know that rowing a rubber dinghy is the last thing you want to try. To add insult to injury, now that we were fairly still a huge hord of mosquitoes had found us and were in full dive bomb mode. While I rowed, the two girls waved their arms around my head to keep the mosquitoes out of my eyes so I could stay on track. It was nip and tuck but we finally made our way back to the boat at 8:45 pm. Not to be deterred, I raced up on deck, grabbed the fuel tank, jumped back into the dinghy and fired up the outboard. Our feet hit the bar's dock at 8:59 and by 9:15 we were eating blueberry pie a la mode!! Things taste so much better when you work for them!
