Portsmouth to Great Bridge

01 November 2015 | Great Bridge, VIrginia
50F Cloudy, Sprinkles 0-5 Knots
Before leaving Portsmouth we decided to take a day and do some sight seeing in Norfolk. After a nice 4 mile run we went to the farmers market and picked up some fresh vegetables. We then took the ferry over to Norfolk and visited the Nauticus Museum. The museum featured the history of the area and the history of the U.S. Navy. After leaving the building we toured the USS Wisconsin Battle Ship. The size of this ship was breath taking. Length 887' Beam 108' and Draft 37'. It was fascinating to tour the ship and see how the crew lived, especially since she was last in action in Operation Desert Storm from January 15th to February 27th 1991. Later that evening we went to see "Bridge of Spies" at the Commodore Theater in Portsmouth. The Commodore Theater is a restored 1945 Art Deco-style theater which shows first-run films while serving food, wine and beer. It looks like a night club from 50's or 60's. It was a great time.

We left Portsmouth this morning at 7:30 AM and headed down the Elizabeth River to Great Bridge. We only went 10 miles, but because we went through several lift bridges and one lock it took us 3 hours. We had a choice of traveling 60 miles today and possibly arriving at the next available anchorage in the dark or break it up and go 10 miles today and 40 miles tomorrow. We chose the latter. Tomorrow we will be heading to Buck Island and will be a step closer to another state further south.
