Mostly Harmless
Anchored in the middle of nowhere
Morgan Mackay
11/05/2007, North Minerva Reef

Minerva Reefs (North and South) are two reef lagoons about 3 miles across in the middle of nowhere. There is no land at high tide, there are no residents. The only visitors are transient yachts moving north and south to and from New Zealand, another 800 miles away.

Peter and I navigated through the tight, unmarked entrance of the north reef an hour before sunset. We found four other boats inside enjoying the shelter from the swells outside.

After a well deserved meal and beer, we'll crash for the night and fit the road again in the morning. The next leg will be about 7 days to New Zealand.

Great big sea on the Great big sea...
Peter J.
11/04/2007, about 40 nm north of Minerva

My apologies in advance if it sounds like I'm gloating, but it does not get much better than this...

The sun is out, the sky is blue, and the sea is this most amazing azure / indigo sort of blue... we've got 15kts of wind on our port beam and we are making a little better than 6kts in 2m seas...

Morgan wanted to do a little motor sailing to charge the batteries as well as speed us up a bit (so we can have some daylight left when we get to Minerva)... so I figured I would spin up Great Big Sea on the laptop... Although we aren't quite in Newfoundland, it seems perfect for right now... maybe a little Jimmy Buffet next :^)

Hope all is well back home, because all is great here... on that note, time to request an updated grib file.

Take care, Peter J.
