Moving Again

04 June 2007 | 274NM to Hawaii

It certainly nice to have wind again! Last night we got our wind back after being becalmed for nearly 48 hours. Yesterday was incredibly hot. The complete lack of wind made for rather stifling conditions! It was 29?C in the cabin. On deck it was simply brutal. We spent most of our time hiding down below.

It was quite surreal. The ocean was completely smooth as far as the eye could see. The only disturbances were the slight ocean swell and the ripples that emanated from the hull as we bobbed in the water. Went for a very quick swim off the transom to cool off. There is something a little freaky about swimming in 2500 feet of water, 370 miles from shore!! But the water was cool and very refreshing.

We motored for several hours while becalmed. It was as good as a time as any to use some of the excess fuel on board. We still have over half a tank left for puttering about port in Kahului before we hit the fuel dock.

Once the wind came up again we ran on spinnaker all night and today until about midday when it became a little too much to handle. We are now running on the genoa in fairly lumpy seas. We have 10 knots of breeze out of the west but we have 6 to 10 foot swells coming from the north. We're both scratching our heads as to where the swells are coming from. It is making for rather confused seas and a lumpy ride but it's a far cry better than sitting and going nowhere!!

The forecast looks good. We should have 10 to 15 knots of wind blowing us directly to Maui until we get in.
