Another day in paradise. It was a fairly long downwind run from Emae to Malekula today. Two fish on the line today, but both shook loose. The first was a mahi that shook loose after jumping in the air. The second was probably the largest fish we've every hooked. It was a big billfish--proably a blue marlin. We saw the big dark shadow in the water and watched him take one lure and peel off a few yards of line, then spit it, take a second lure and peel off a few yards of line, then spit it. The he went back to the first lure and ran. He peeled off more line than any other fish we've hooked, by far--and I had the drag at max. The reel is a Penn 50 VSX which has a higher drag than other penn 50 models. Its spooled with almost 2000 yards of 80lb spectra, and I was seriously worried we'd get spooled. We fought him for about half an hour before he broke the line in the 80lb monofilament "shock absorber" between the spectra (which doesn't stretch), and the 150lb leader attached to the lure. Oh well, we probably wouldn't have made it into the anchorage before dark if we'd have completed getting him on board.
Nice news today about the America's cup. Too bad there were more kiwis and aussies on the American boat than Americans. Most of America doesn't even know this race exists... Its a bit sad for those of us that love sailing.
