New Photo Galleries

We are sitting in shelter bay marina now. Shelter Bay is the only marina on the Caribbean side of the Canal. Great place because all yachts heading to the Pacific converge here. The photo is of Morning Glory loaded with fenders and tires, ready to transit.

I will be doing a bit of catching up on the blog as we prepare to go through the Canal. Presently our transit date is set for April 15th. In the mean time, I have just added a number of NEW PHOTO GALLERIES--please take a look :)

I am finally catching up and am amazed to see how far you have gone since I last heard from you. I am soooo envious but so excited for you.

We're watching for you on the Panama Canal webcams! If you get this in time, can you let us know what time you're starting your transit? Or maybe you're already on your way thru. So exciting!!
Portobello

After Isla Linton, we next stopped at Portobello, and last stop before the Canal Zone. The central american gold shipping capital for the Spaniards. Finally captured by the pirate Captain Morgan, and then later by the British Admiral Edward Vernon (also famous for the name of George Washington's Estate--Mount Vernon). Vernon's capture of Portobello destroyed the economy which didn't recover until the Panama Canal was built. The forts and Custom's house for the gold are impressive.

Isla Linton was our first stop upon leaving Kuna Yala. There is a research station on this Island, and it is home to some Black Spider Monkeys which are a very endagered species. We were lucky enough to get a nice picture of one.

Just a short stop on the way to the Canal zone.

Reach Falls

We are still in Port Antonio Jamaica. Amy, Stephen and Rivers have flown to Ohio for Grandma Kohl's birthday. It looks like we will be sitting here a while. The forecast is for near gale to gale winds for the next week and more in a large part of the Caribbean that we will need to cross to get to Panama. And the sea state is not expected to be less than about 12-20 ft. Fortunately, the weather here is lovely. A few hours each day are hot, and the rest is warm and mild. I've been spending a lot of time at the Portland Jerk Center and Piggy's Jerk Center. [insert favorite joke here]. Wonderful Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork.

The picture is of Reach Falls, a beautiful waterfall with great caves and hiking through clear cool pools that we explored on a day trip with some friends from Makai and Water Musick. The Musick's put together a little video of the day which can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rouo2Ibvibo

I did a bit of the filming too :)

We loved Port Antonio as well. Don't get caught caught up in spending time in the San Blas, spend it in the Marquesas instead. The weather conditions are also much better now than later between Panama and the Galapagos.

We've made it too the Bahamas. Nice 40 hour crossing from Vero Beach to Nassau. We broke a big binnacle compass that bounced hard onto the deck as we crashed through some waves in the Fort Pierce inlet, and I had to dive under the boat in the middle of the gulf stream to remove a line that was caught in the prop--but on balance we caught a delicious Mahi Mahi, and a nice (if small) 35lb Marlin. What a great fighter! We let him go to become a big Marlin. We are now sitting in the nice sunshine and waiting from some favorable wind to head to the Exumas. I'll post some pictures soon.

Space Center
11/13/2011, Titusville, FL

Nice day at the Kennedy Space Center yesterday.
To those of you who are conspiracy theorists, and think that the moon landing was faked: you are idiots.

It was very moving to stand on the place where Gus Grissom died. And to see what was achieved with technology that was crude by todays standards. But the physics are the same--and the minds of those days gave us the foundation for so much that is taken for granted today.

Daytona

Probably a nice place if one were to ever get off the boat.....

Movin Again

Just a quick night in St. Augustine.

Clementines!

Fernandina
Art / Still Windy
11/07/2011, Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, FL

Still windy. Fortunately it has been from the N to NE so it has made our trip down the ICW much faster. We've covered a lot of ground. Today we decided we needed a rest. The town at Fernandina is very nice. Great mexican food--or at least it seemed nice since we didn't have to cook or clean up! A Margarita helps too ha ha.

Starting to see a lot of shrimp boats.
