I got the word from my doctors that they believe I'm stable enough to leave. (Medically speaking, of course. Alas, I'm afraid that my "stability" will forever be a topic for conjecture.....) To that end, I'm beginning to make preparations for getting back under way. No small feat after a nearly six-month hiatus.
My plan right now is to sail back up to New Bern, North Carolina, where I spent most of last summer. I'm planning to leave in mid to late April, finally! Don't get me wrong, to use the current vernacular, I love me some Charleston, I'm just ready to start moving again. For quite some time there, I didn't think that was going to be an option.
Now, I have another decision to make. In May, it will be time to renew (or not) my Sailblogs account. I'll leave it to you (3 or 4) loyal readers. Is it worthwhile to do so or should I let it expire? Anyway, I have a couple of months to make up my mind so feel free to opine in the comment section.
Meanwhile, thank you all for your cards, emails and letters of support. It really helped me through a tough time.

I've enjoyed following your travels from Albany, NY. I hope you keep going.
Looking forward to more stories and updates from you.

I got up and continued on to the Charleston City Marina, where I planned to rest up and hopefully get better. When I still was no better after four days, I took a cab to the hospital and was admitted.
I underwent surgery for a fistula in my lower abdomen which had caused a bowel obstructioin and severe infection. I was released after three weeks and, within a few days was re-admitted for blood clots in both lungs. This stay lasted 5 days before I was released again on blood thinners. Any questions?
Anyway, now it looks like I'm going to be staying here for the forseeable future to receive follow-up treatment from my doctors and hopefully recover completely. Consequently, you won't be hearing much from me for a while.

I woke up sicker than the day before but continued on to the Isle of Palms Marina, just north of Charleston.

Once again, I got the anchor up early and headed south. As I was passing through Myrtle Beach, I began to experience severe abdominal pain. By the time I had travelled the 60 miles to Georgetown, I was in pretty bad shape. I topped off the fuel and water and went to bed.

Raised the anchor at dawn and proceeded through the Frost Cut and into the Cape Fear River. As I proceeded down the river, I noticed a building incoming tidal current that was slowing my progress. It continued to build as I approached the mouth of the river.
As I left the river at Southport, it put the tidal current behind me which boosted my speed . I stopped for fuel and provisions at St James Plantation Marina before continuing on to the Calabash Creek in South Carolina, where I anchored for the night.

I got the anchor up at 0700 and left the anchorage. There was some early morning fog that burned off within an hour or so. I motored south to Carolina Beach and anchored in the basin behind the beach.
