Farewell to Florida...

25 March 2012 | Jekyll Island, GA
Mike
Well, I was finally leaving Florida for the first time since September of last year. The west winds were a little stronger than expected but I managed to get off the dock with no problems. It was a clear sunny day but the winds following the passing front were quite strong indeed. They continued to build as I approached Jekyll Sound.

By the time I reached the sound, they were approaching gale-force. It made for a wet and lumpy crossing of the sound and inlet. I made it to Jekyll Harbor Marina without incident and settled in.

About ten miles into the trip, I passed the nuclear submarine base and decided to snap a photo of the rather impressive "degaussing pen." Apparently nuclear subs pick up a magnetic charge while they're at sea and these pens de-magnetize them before they return to their hangar.
