Time To Go Out

I had an eye problem yesterday and went down to Solomons to give S/V Honu a thorough cleaning in the cabin. The topsides still need to be cleaning, the sails need to be reinstalled, but the new batteries have been installed and the shaft has been aligned after the strut repair was completed by the boatyard. The weather on Saturday is expected to be clear and in the upper 60's, so it's time to haul in the lines, fire up the iron 3-cylinder, and head out into the bay.

On The Hard

I received a call from Alan, the boatyard manager at Spring Cove Marina, that they found room and S/V Honu is on the hard for the winter. I will head down this weekend to install the cabin cover I manufactured last year to allow the ports to remain as dry as possible in advance of replacing them. I picked [...]

Hatches Battened and Spring Lines Secured

Hurricane Sandy is slowly churning her way closer and closer to our area, though she should pass to the north after coming ashore in New Jersey. The First Mate and I were down onboard S/V Honu yesterday to make sure that she is properly prepared to ride out the storm. The predicted path for the storm is well off shore and the general opinion around the marina was that there would not be much storm surge to worry about (if any) - in fact, there is a possibility that the rotation of the winds in the storm will actually pull water out from the bay (which may cause some of the boats closer to shore to bounce a little).

Sailing Across The Bay

I was able to get out on the water this past weekend with my daughter, Melissa, and her boyfriend, Aaron. We had fine wind (10-14 knots NNE) and raced across the bay and back in a little more than two hours. Honu seemed to be in good shape when we arrived, but Aaron and I had to work together to cleanup [...]

Time to get back on the water

This past weekend held sunny and breezy weather - the perfect mix for sailing. Matthew and I went down to Spring Cove Marina, took care of a few chores onboard, had a bite to eat at the local Roy Rogers, then fired up the ol' three cylinder (fired up on the first crank!), and headed out in to the Patuxent River. Matthew was on the helm and I took care of the halyards and sheets as we zipped across towards the Naval Air Station then up towards the bridge before turning around on a broad reach at 7+ knots. I am really looking forward to next weekend!

Parts in Hand

I just got back from a quick lunchtime errand down to West Marine in Alexandria to pick up the winch maintenance parts and materials and I told my boss that I am taking off on Thursday. It's time to begin the off-season maintenance projects and get ready for another season on the water!
