Huzzah's in Paradise!

After 18 days and 20 hours of sailing since Mexico, Huzzah is now comfortably at anchor in the Bay of Virgins, Fatu Hiva, Marquesas Islands. Was the journey easy - no! An epic journey of this nature never is. If it were easy, everybody would be doing it. We slowed the boat down for the last 2 days to arrive at daybreak. What awesome feeling as the island was shrouded in fog and mist as we approached. The smell of land was unmistakable! It was heavy and sweet, and as we motored into the anchorage, we could smell and see lush green valleys. Lush doesn't even come close to describing what I'm looking at. The cliffs are almost a fluorescent green, steep, with more species of vegetation than I can recognize. Goats ply the high rock spires that surround the bay. Surreal sounds flood my senses after so many days at sea. The waves breaking on the shore, chickens, goats and church bells ringing for Sunday Mass. I'll stop even trying to convey my sense of this place. As Thor Heyerdahl wrote, "A painter is better armed to convey the majesty of the Marquesas than a writer". And I totally get that! The anchorage is small, but only six boats are here at the moment. The bay is on the leeward side of the island, so the air is cool and with the present cloud cover and 16 knots of wind, doesn't feel as moist as we've become accustomed to on passage.
Life is Happy aboard Huzzah!
