Checking Out Raiatea

After Bora Bora, we were feeling a bit under the weather. After all, we came to the South Pacific to get away from the rain! After motoring upwind for five hours, we entered the reef on the NE side of Raiatea Island and worked our way clockwise around the top of the island to the East side looking for a good anchorage. Our definition of a good anchorage means it's a dinghy ride away from internet and cold beer. Problem was, after slowly working around the top of the island, we couldn't seem to find anything suitable. We tried a shallow patch off the Island's largest town of Uturoa, but only found poor holding and lots of coral which is totally unsuitable. Since anchoring in 100' depths is impractical, we kept looking until we finally came across a small patch of 30' water a few miles away with three boats anchored there. So we dropped the anchor for the evening. Unfortunately, the water was too murky from all the rain to check our anchor set. But it became clear in the middle of the night that our anchor chain had become foul on rocks or coral. After returning from our visit to town the next day, we couldn't retrieve the anchor! Crap - the chain was wrapped around something! With too much current and too little light to dive down for a look, we fastened a couple fender buoys to the anchor chain and went to bed. At 1:15 am we got some good news as the current, wind and fender buoys' worked their magic and we were free! Whew - that was a relief. So we'll continue South along Raiatea's east coast, gunkholing the anchorages, albeit more cautiously.... Cheers from Huzzah!
