Tour de Huahine

05 August 2016 | Huahine
Gerry
After arriving in Huahine (pronounced who-wa-hini) and catching up on our sleep, we decided to rent a car and tour the islands, Huahine Nui (big) and Huahine Iti (small) with our cruiser friends Bill & Deb. Not a big challenge as both islands occupy a footprint of only nine by six miles. But there is a lot to see from the road and the weather was not good for snorkeling anyway. So off we went in a counter-clockwise direction with rain parkas in hand. Our first stop was another (sigh) archaeological site called a "marae" near the village of Maeva. Check. I knew more where ahead, and it's hard for me to get excited about these piles of rocks. Then we went to a working pearl farm and got a great glimpse into this industry that dominates these islands, before checking out the scared blue-eyed eels! A French tourist feeding them in the river had a bandage on his hand from some incident moments earlier, so we stood on the banks and just observed, thank you. The thing that amazes me here as elsewhere in Polynesia, is how clean and manicured the public areas and homes are. This place is trimmed up as neat as a 50's mustache!
Then off to the Southern island of Iti for lunch, and finally to check out all the gorgeous white sand beaches on the south west tip of the island. We knew this area was our next destination, so we also did our recon to locate the closest "magasin" (very small grocery stores) to our anchorage. Yep, that was a dam exciting day!
But wait, it gets better. The Huahine Yacht Club had a band playing at that evening's happy hour, and it's none other than our fellow cruiser buddy Steve (Li-Ward) playing his steel string guitar.

Sweet, let the Jimmy Buffet tunes roll.
Life is good aboard Huzzah!
