It seemed ironic to me, but when we were shopping at the large grocery store here in Huahine, there were only a few, bruised bananas in the produce aisle. My assumption is that they are easy to grow and plentiful in Polynesia so nobody buys them. I like them, and they're great with my breakfast cereal. So, the very next day as we're hiking across an island and a Tahitian man points into the dense foliage and says "you want bananas & papayas - free", I'm on it. A muddy trek into the jungle-like hillside, a few hacks of the machete and we drop a banana plant. Then, a few pokes with long sticks to jar the papayas loose, and we have more that we can eat. I thank the guy, and start to carry the bananas out. Damn, their heavy! Bill meets me at the trail head and helps.
Of course we share with the other boats in the anchorage as we know the bananas will all ripen at once! Just another adventure in paradise!
