30 nautical miles, 5 hours 20 minutes
This is the end of week two and we are still learning things about Mystery. Today I learned that you cannot motor-sail on a port tack. I also learned which of the three engine warning lights is the one for an over-heating engine. The left one always comes on when you start the engine, so that is for the alternator. But today, when the alarm went off the middle light came on. So - middle = over-heating, left = alternator and that leaves the right one which must be a loss of oil pressure. I do not want to see that one come on.
The weather was perfect, the wind was light and the sun was shining. We sailed past Isles of Shoals. What a neat little group of islets. Quoting the 2008 Waterway Guide:
"Capt. John Smith charted this group of islets and ledges in 1614. Taken by their wind-swept beauty, he also attempted to name them in his honor, but the earlier name given the isles by itinerant fishermen is the one that stuck.
Ancient tales - of pirate silver, noble lightkeepres, licentious fishwives, drowned and frozen sailors, famous summer tourists and murder most foul - hang almost as heavily about these islands as the frequent summer fogs."
We entered the Portsmith area and looked first at Little Harbour, then on to the Portsmith Yacht Club. A PYC member offered to drive me to fill up our propane tank that we use for all our cooking. I think we saw most of the state of New Hampshire. We got to a place called BJs (I think) and they were not able to fill up a 10 pound propane bottle. "We only do 20 pound bottles and those are $14.95. I would not know how to charge for a ten pound bottle?" said the worker.
Hmmm - let's see - if 20 pounds is about $15 then ten pounds is . . . We got the tank filled at a U-Haul for $4.00.
Still cannot get the NanoStation2 wifi special long distance antenna to work - oh well. I guess I need a pet techie on board or something.
Tomorrow - a shore day - Linda has some writing to do and I have things to do on the boat.
