Ice in the mist

After a damp and cold sail along the south coast of the islands yesterday afternoon the evening looked promising with sunlight illuminating the glaciers of Coronation Island. However the fog closed in and we spent the evening dodging icebergs in the fog luckily there were not too many growlers around and by dark we were clear of the ice and past the Inaccessible Islands. We had a light headwind throughout most of the night and decided to motor directly towards Stanley rather than try to sail the breeze. This morning the breeze freed us a little and we are now making good time motor-sailing towards a point south an west of the Falklands to try and get some westing 'in the bag' before we get the inevitable north west winds - the course from the South Orkneys to the Falklands is NW; right into the prevailing winds for this time of the year.

We have spotted several whales, some humpbacks near the boat yesterday and several unidentified sightings today. There are a few wandering albatross around, the usual Cape petrels, a few of the little Wilson's petrels and a few Antarctic fulmars. We passed another large lone ice berg this morning drifting in the direction of the South Sandwich islands or perhaps South Georgia.

Skip cooked a carbonara lunch today, I served rice and left over goulash for dinner last night. The next big decision is what to have for dinner, well for those who are eating anyway as we have a couple of seasickness casualties. Dinner tonight could be Irish Stew as we have a shoulder of mutton left, There are couple of nice pieces of fresh vacuum packed beef too. We still have plenty of the common vegetables; onions, carrots, potatoes, pumpkin, peppers, cabbage, etc.. A great selection of pulses and grains, We don't carry many tins, just tomatoes, sweet corn, green beans and a few things like that. We make fresh bread every day.

Well dinner suggestions via comments on the blog please. We'll see what we can do and report back.
