Golfo de Penas
28 September 2014
This evening I entered the Messier Channel on the southern side of Golfo de Penas. The previous two days had been hard going against headwinds and three metre waves. However, as I passed Cape Raper, on the north side of the gulf, the winds abated and I spent the day motoring south through this notorious gulf in flat calm conditions.
I contacted the lighthouse on the island of San Pedro to report my position and informed them that I would be anchoring in a small bay 10nm south east of the lighthouse for the night. The invited me for dinner and suggested I anchor just south of their jetty. This was a pleasant surprise as I expected to spend my birthday in an isolated cove on my own.
Three young navy guys man this lighthouse. They are dropped off on this little island with supplies and do not see anybody else until they are relieved four months later. Hardly a stressful life as they have perhaps two ships passing per day. They love it!
