Falmouth
03 July 2007 | Falmouth
We sadly pulled anchor in BI and headed North to a little place called Padanaram. Initially we were going to pick Mike and Rach up there and go to Cuttyhunk, Martha's Vineyard and back, but after receiving the weather report decided against it as it's suppose to blow 35kts with 9-14ft seas on Thursday. Not great traveling weather. So, today we moved to Falmouth which is closer to the Vineyard where we will hole up for the rest of the week. Not a bad place to 'hole up', huh.
Padanaram was ok. The New Bedford yacht club has a monopoly on the entire harbor. We anchored parallel to the breakwall which was a nice anchorage but pretty far out. The yacht club charges $45 a night for a mooring which includes use of their facilities(launch and restaurant). We thought that was a little hefty so opted to anchor. However, we did try to go to the restaurant and they would not let us eat there...even though there were free tables. Apparently business is good for them. It's funny because we all like a little exclusivity but really only if it's in our favor! So, after getting turned away at the yacht club we went back to the boat and had a gourmet meal (chicken nuggets, lipton butter noodles and fruit).
The next day Ben and I took a cab to town and provisioned. It was nice to get some time alone with Ben. He is just a joy to be around.
Today's activities are to get the boat ready for our guests that are arriving tonight around nine. Otis is outside washing down while I procrastinate inside...old habits die hard. We are very much looking forward to seeing Rach and Mike. None of us have ever been to the Vineyard before(maybe O has but it was a long time ago) so it will be fun to explore.
I made some notes for those cruisers that may be going to Padanaram.
South Bedford yacht club has moorings but if you don't want to pay for one you can anchor out by the edge of the harbor.
You can tie up your dinghy after five at the harbormasters dock which is to right after the bridge. During the day you can use the town dock which is under the bridge to port then walk across the bridge into town.
We took a taxi to the North Dartmouth Shop and Save which had a mall across the street. There is a closer grocery store but I had to go to Best Buy. The mall area has pretty much everything and it's about a $15 cab ride.
There is a package store that delivers to the marina(he told me only after the cab took us there). The store is called Acme Liquors and their number is 508.996.2263
The town taxi number is 508.999.0003
Hope this helps.
