Cumberland Island, GA

01 May 2011
Cumberland Island has been inhabited for thousands of years but never in a number to alter the character of its landscape. It has a rich history of Indians, Spanish soldiers and missionaries, British forts, the First African Baptist Church, the Carnegies and other wealthy landholders but one of the main attractions is the ruins of Dungeness which was built by Gen. Nathanael Greene's widow, Catherine Green. It was four-story tabby home. It must have been impressive in its day! There are still private homes on the island...most of them Carnegie relatives.
