Lauderdale Arrival !

21 January 2011 | Fort Lauderdale, FL
Faune
Iolite has now come full circle. We purchased her in 2005 while she was resting/sweating under the Fort Lauderdale sun. She was so sweet & innocent then.

She arrived here today following a full day of sail from West Palm Beach. We came through the Port of Everglades Inlet, turned into the ICW and steamed about 1-2 miles before docking UNDER the Las Olas Bridge.....as you see above. We can hear the cars rattle over the lift portion of the bridge. It is a busy spot as tour boats, sport fishers, water taxis and large (HUGE) yachts go cruising by. You see it all here. In fact, about an hour ago, just as it turned dark, about a 60' Lazzarra powerboat came out from under the bridge. In the aft cockpit there was a lit pole revolving, first purple then blue then red. And on said pole was a pole dancer being filmed in action with appropriate music blaring. To add to this (if anything needed to be) was a large flat screen on the inside bulkhead showing what was being filmed.

We're moving to Cooley's Landing Marina in the morning........

The name "iolite" comes from the Greek word for violet. Iolite is a semi precious stone, purple-ish in colour and it has also been called "water-sapphire" and the "Vikings' Compass", because of its ability to determine the direction of the sun on overcast days. This works by determining the [...]

We visited the Butterfly Garden which is part of the Natural Museum within the University of Florida (home of the Gators!), in Gainesville. Hundreds of butterflies are housed in a vivarium (huge enclosed space with sun & air moving through special screens & gorgeous gardens with streams/waterfalls flowing through). If you sit still they land on you to rest & make you feel wonderful. Most peaceful experience ever!!

With deepest respect to The Deep South that we just love, there are certain features that do create its sugared charm. Here are but a few.
