WHERE TO START?

15 April 2011 | Emerald Bay, Exuma

WHERE TO START?
We are now in Emerald Bay Marina just above Georgetown, and have been here for several days doing some regular maintenance items on the boat. With our Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht club membership we only pay $ .75 /ft /night vs $ 2.25 / ft. that is the posted fee. Great facilities, friendly staff, free wi fi, free laundry (unheard of), free shuttle to grocery/bank - what a deal!!
The main reason there have been so few blog posts is the lack of internet or the slowness for uploading pictures which frustrates me so I don't do it. It is kind of great to finally get to the place in your head where if you don't feel like doing something you just move on. Plus, we've been busy seeing the Exuma Islands.
A quick recap of the past couple weeks :
After leaving Rock Sound in Eleuthera we crossed over to Highborne Cay, then down to Shroud Cay and Warderick Wells in Exuma Land & Sea Park. From there it was a nice sail to Big Majors (beach with swimming pigs), then into the Staniel Cay Yacht Club to await the arrival of Lynn and Lon from Kansas (with whom we crossed the Atlantic in '06). They spent five fun-filled days with us. We ran up to Cambridge Cay, swam the Sea Aquarium and had the nicest swimming and snorkeling ever.
After Lynn and Lon left it was back out to big Majors with an easy run to Black Point Settlement next day. From there we sailed down to Galliott Cay and after one night it was out in the big blue Tongue of the Ocean for the run down to Emerald Bay in Great Exuma Island.
The weather is turning warmer and we have the boat covers/ awnings on for the first time. We even have been using the dingy bimini to escape the hot sun - it is a saving grace, as are the awnings.
Our thoughts are now to turning north. We will probably leave here Sunday, head back up the Exuma chain of islands with a run into Nassau. From there we intend to do the Abacos Islands and will jump offshore from there probably to Charleston. Several overnighters later we will be back in the Chesapeake.
Our time here in the Bahamas has been everything and more... unbelievable beaches (Bob is a major beach connoisseur), water colors, friendly people, lots of facilities and places to tuck into.

p.s. the picture above is Bob in Shroud Cay, part of the Exuma Land & Sea Park.....iolite in the background.

The name "iolite" comes from the Greek word for violet. Iolite is a semi precious stone, purple-ish in colour and it has also been called "water-sapphire" and the "Vikings' Compass", because of its ability to determine the direction of the sun on overcast days. This works by determining the [...]

We visited the Butterfly Garden which is part of the Natural Museum within the University of Florida (home of the Gators!), in Gainesville. Hundreds of butterflies are housed in a vivarium (huge enclosed space with sun & air moving through special screens & gorgeous gardens with streams/waterfalls flowing through). If you sit still they land on you to rest & make you feel wonderful. Most peaceful experience ever!!
