Today the water turned green. The sea water, that is. I'd left Frosty Bay in the morning, and I'd zigged and zagged as I followed the weaving channel through the narrows of pretty Zimovia Strait. I had entered the wider northern section of the strait when I suddenly realized that the flat-calm water had abruptly changed color from it's former gray-blue to a pastel pale green. I'm a few miles from the mouth of the Stikine river, which flows from British Columbia, collecting glacial melt as it wanders into Alaska. The glacial melt is the source of the green water color.

It's not only the water that's been changing. The landscape is looking more rugged and cold, with mountaintops that are pointed and snow-covered. My next stop will be Petersburg, from which I'll enter Frederick Sound, where one can encounter floating ice that's dropped, or "calved", off of nearby glaciers. The air temperature varies a lot. I was cloaked in several layers against the chilly breeze this morning, but walking around the Sunday-quiet town this afternoon I was too warm even without a coat.

I'll stay here through tomorrow night, then I'll be continuing to Petersburg to hang out for a few days, until Eric and Shawn fly in.
