Portage Bay

This morning we motored to the north end of Thomas Bay under sunny, clear skies to see Baird Glacier, which has melted back from the water's edge but is still close enough to be viewable. We stayed well away from the shoals at the glacier's base, both because the water is murky and because the shoal had visibly increased in size and shape since my chart was made. It was a perfect day for photographs.
Then we retraced our path to exit the bay and traveled a few miles west in Frederick Strait into Portage Bay, which is long and wide, but with a shallow mud bottom that is good for anchoring. We launched the dinghy and explored the shoreline for awhile, but the tide was high and the woods were dense, so we didn't walk very far.
While under way today we watched a dozen humpback whales feeding, saw two groups of 8 to 10 seals swim by, and passed our first chunk of drift ice, which wasn't very large but was an omen of things to come.
