More Sun
10 August 2015 | Octopus Islands, BC
Richard
Today's passage was short, only 17 miles, and I'm back at the Octopus Islands anchorage, where I spent three nights on the way north, waiting for strong northwesterlies to lighten. There were only a handful of boat anchored here then, but now, in prime vacation season, it's crowded with at least a couple of dozen boats jammed into the smallest and coziest part of the anchorage.
It's also the season that brings out the least experienced boaters. Soon after I anchored, I watched a sailboat come in next to me, drop anchor while the boat was moving forward in the wrong direction, and never actually set the anchor to dig it into the bottom. I reminded myself that only light winds are forecast overnight, so the weight of their chain will probably keep them in position.
Another afternoon of warm sun! It feels so good to experience some summer weather. I feel like these last few days, with nicer weather and shorter runs, are changing my trip from an adventure to a vacation. A nice way to wrap up the trip. Of course, I'm not home yet, and more southeasterlies are appearing in the end-of-week forecasts, so the adventure may not be over. Which is fine.
Next time I come to BC, I'll get a Canadian fishing license. While there was just too much going on to fish in Alaska while underway, I could more easily do some fishing on good weather days in BC.
