ARRIVAL IN PUERTO RICO

04 March 2011 | Boqueron
Michele/clear and sunny
As soon as we left the protection of Mona Island we encountered the big waves and winds of the Mona Passage but the closer we got to Puerto Rico the calmer conditions became. Easterly winds again meant a lot of tacking and we didn't arrive into the huge shallow bay of Boqueron until midday.
We had to call the US authorities to announce our arrival and were told all three of us (we still have Dan aboard) had to go to Mayaguez. We took the dingy to shore and linked up with Raul Santiago (a recommendation from Noonsite) who drove us to ferry terminal to see customs and immigration. He was a great character and his help was invaluable, it would be a very difficult check in to do under one's own steam.
It took 2 hours with the officials and a lot of form-filling etc but they were incredibly polite and friendly and certainly didn't ask for bribes!
Boqueron used to be a little fishing village but is now a party place for Puerto Ricans on the weekend. It seemed surprisingly run down and the water in the bay is murky. With nowhere to provision, it's not a place to linger.
We did have a great tshirt made with a hand-painted picture of Irony on it. Miguel, the artist has been there for 21 years and did a great job. For $20 including the tshirt, it's a must!
