SPANISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
18 March 2011 | Sun Bay, Vieques
Michele/clear and sunny
While Nic worked on the repairs, Anna and I explored the attractions of Puerto Patillas. Nothing much to see, it probably livens up at the weekends. We ended up having to get a bus inland to get on the internet and check the weather. We saw a lionfish while snorkelling near the boat. These are not native to the Caribbean and are threatening to upset the natural balance of sea life amongst the islands.
To take advantage of calmer seas and gentler headwinds, we left at 3am for Vieques, one of the so-called Spanish Virgin Islands. I spent nearly 2 hours spotting lobster pots along the coastline, fortunately they were nicely illuminated by the near-to-full moon.
We have anchored in Sun Bay, a 3km crescent of white sand beach fringed with palm trees. It's lovely to have some clear water again.
