Inter-island ferry in Mayotte

11 November 2017 | Mayotte
Dani
The connection by ferry between Petite Terre (Dzaoudzi) and Grande Terre is assured by two brand new double-ended roll-on-roll-off vessels built in Mauritius by Chantiers Navals de l'Océan Indien. During the day there is a departure each way every half hour. Nice crossing for cars and a capacity of more than 500 passengers.

Mayotte: Dzaoudzi Anchorage

11 November 2017 | Dzaoudzi, Mayotte
Dani
Having arrived in Dzaoudzi on 17th October, we anchored, checked in with the authorities and drove round Grande Terre. Mayotte is facing a large scale immigration crisis. Apparently 40% of the population consists of illegal, undocumented persons from the Comoro Islands. We were told to be careful with our belongings... Island Bird was tied up to a mooring buoy and is right in the middle of the picture. All went well throughout our stay. Our generator got repaired and fully serviced and is now working perfectly. But noone could repair the mainsail...

Sunset at sea Seychelles to Mayotte

11 November 2017 | At sea between Seychelles and Mayotte
Dani
We had good weather for the 6 days we took to reach Mayotte. Some showers and some periods without any wind at all. However, because of a tear at the bottom of the main sail, we sailed with two reefs almost all the way. Suprisingly we maintained an average speed of over 6 knots. Not bad for sailing for 6 days with two reefs in the main sail....

Passing a large LNG carrier in the Mozambique Channel

22 October 2017 | At sea: Mozambique Channel
Dani
Entering the Mozambique Channel, we passed this large Liquid Natural Gas Carrier. It was a thundery morning with not so good visibility and this ship appeared right ahead on collision course. It seemed not to have seen me and I had to slightly alter course to pass at a reasonable distance. Impressive from a small sailing boat! I called the officer of the watch on VHF. She was bound for the Red Sea with no specific destination port.

Fishing for dinner

22 October 2017 | At sea: Seychelles to Mayotte
Dani
On leaving the Seychelles, we put a line out to catch dinner. Island Bird is not often sailing at the right speed for trolling. Sometimes too slow, sometimes too fast... We troll beweeen 4 and 7 knots. At 7 knots, we caught this wahoo (bécune) just after leaving the Seychelles. It gave us a good fight. Later we caught two bonitos. That was enough fresh fish for the 5 to 6 day crossing to Mayotte.

Island Bird has left Victoria

10 October 2017 | Beau Vallon Bay, at anchor
Dani
We left Victoria this afternoon after a lot of false starts. Repairs, change of destination and delays because of the small pox epidemic in Madagascar. Finally we are heading for Mayotte. With me are Christophe Robert (from Annecy) and Jonathan Mellon (from Saint Louis, Seychelles). Having departed from Angel Fish Anchorage near Eden Island, we rounded the north of Mahé and anchored in Beau Vallon for a quiet night sleep. Reason: NO WIND... We will leave in the morning when about 8 to 10 knots is expected. Lets hope so....Then 5 days sailing and we will be in Mayotte.
