Ode to Old Age

We made it back in time to do a little work on a project we have going in the back yard: a retaining wall. We have bought 4 palettes of bricks and we are about to lay them. We've hired a young man who is a very good worker and he has been ever so helpful. Today I (Jay) went to the ophthalmologist's office [...]

Out for a couple of weeks

In late June, Anita’s shoulder and my eye healed sufficiently to make a little journey on Karina C.

Went into town today. Shopped and got enough groceries to keep us full until we hit Brookings (probably Sunday night). We are encountering some bank problems back home and I can't say enough about how badly I have been let down by so many people. I feel a little cut off. All I get are excuses about why things can't get done. I am beginning to feel the best thing to do is just "let go." Keep cruising.
In the afternoon I made up a batch of marine tex to fix an owie on Karina's hull we got at the fuel float here. So far that has been a bit of a disappointment as it went off in the cup, but not on Karina. I am expecting it will take a bit more time as the temperature outside is still cool and the place where I kept the pot was warm. We will see tomorrow.

Some friend from down the dock loaned me a heat lamp. Lord only knows why they would carry a heat lamp on their boat. Anyhow, the heat lamp hardened up the marine tex and we are good for painting. Now we are in fog this morning, so we will have to wait until the humidity gets a little better and then we can get out the paint can. For the time being, we will change the oil on the motor.
We had a nice evening of cards with Arn and Brian. Brian built a homemade boat of steel with a very unusual rig. It is made of triangular material in the same way an antenna tower might be made. Seems to work for him though. He recently lost his wife of 45 years and decided to make this passage with his friend Arn. Brian was good enough to take some high res video of us as we made some music. It was a fun evening.
8/19 later...
Windy day today. NW 25 and that is against the rule of 20 that we usually follow. We figure that, even if the forecast messes up by 10 knots, we are still good to go. I decided not to paint over the marine tex as it needs a bit of time to set up. Instead, we will wait until we get to a warmer and less humid climate before we apply paint. It is fine for now. Today, we changed motor oil and went over to Englund's to get some fuel filters and some 333 (paint cleaner) that I use to prep the blue of Karina's hull.
This afternoon we are showering and doing laundry. Tomorrow, all we have to do is wait until the winds die down Saturday morning.
We are kicking around the idea of pushing on for Crescent City (125 miles) as we are not enjoying the weather here on the Oregon Coast. Even though it is an overnight trip, it gets us South faster. At 5 knots, that will be a 25 hour trip. People say they like it here. I have no idea why as it seems always cool.
