Ode to Old Age

We made it back in time to do a little work on a project we have going in the back yard: a retaining wall. We have bought 4 palettes of bricks and we are about to lay them. We've hired a young man who is a very good worker and he has been ever so helpful. Today I (Jay) went to the ophthalmologist's office [...]

Out for a couple of weeks

In late June, Anita’s shoulder and my eye healed sufficiently to make a little journey on Karina C.

Into the water

24 October 2011 | San Carlos
Jay/ Very Hot
Yesterday, we got Karina into the water @ 0830. There to greet us at the dock was another boat right where I was going to go in. Anyhow, after a little gesticulating and yelling he got the idea and moved back. He wasn’t going to get out of the water until I got in so he let me in. We warped Karina around him and started the process of getting the engine ready for startup.
The motor started well. I needed to burp the dripless shaft as always. We were soon on our way to A-18. We noticed soon we were right across from Kasasa (another BCA boat). We had a nice time visiting with them and catching up on their cruising adventures. They spent the summer in the Bay of Los Angeles where they found it very hot. We are finding San Carlos very very hot. I have no way of relating to the kind of heat they experienced. We have done a lot of boat jobs:
Washed Karina fron to back
1-Changed the motor oil.
2-Created a bike locker. We have been keeping a big bucket just behind the liferaft. It just carries both bikes. We will need to keep it wrapped in plastic as it will be taking a bit of spray now and then.
3- Sails are now all rigged and ready for sea.
What needs doing from here:
1- We need to install the new depth sounder
2- We need to clean Wayne thoroughly
3- Zinc the motor. Its just one of those naughty jobs I hate.
4- Lay away all the stuff inside Karina so we can make sea.
We are going to ask for a few more days at least to get things sorted out.
Yesterday the net went off just as the office was closing. This has totally screwed the internet for the computer. It makes keeping up the blog a bit of a chore. Fortunately the marina has pool privileges. The pool also has a rocking wifi setup. I was able to Skype Mom this afternoon.
The batteries have all come up fine. Bank 2 was a little slow. I guess I will head over to Autozone tomorrow and get a couple on new starter batteries. It is a sad day when you have to sail/drift around the sea looking for a charge to get you into port.
Today we went to the pool after lunch. This was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. The water was just a little warmer than the air (@90F). Didn’t get much work done, but we are a lot happier.
Tonight we will watch a movie and then off to bed.
Later…
Change of plans…. We got into the new depthsounder. It works very well. Ron Maggi of West Marine guessed our old transducer mount and got it right! It is going to take a little time to configure the sounder and run the wires correctly. I hope we are going to be able to keep the moorage for a few more days.
Next Day
We were lucky enough to stay here at Marina San Carlos until next Friday. This is good as we still need to do quite a bit of commissioning before we head to sea. We had to temporarily move to R-5 and then back to A- 9 where we can stay for the rest of the time we are in harbour.
This morning I finished wiring the new sounder. Works very well. Ron is the man! We are going to celebrate by spending the afternoon at the pool.
