Ode to Old Age

We made it back in time to do a little work on a project we have going in the back yard: a retaining wall. We have bought 4 palettes of bricks and we are about to lay them. We've hired a young man who is a very good worker and he has been ever so helpful. Today I (Jay) went to the ophthalmologist's office [...]

Out for a couple of weeks

In late June, Anita’s shoulder and my eye healed sufficiently to make a little journey on Karina C.

Los Gatos

A much nicer day today. We were able to launch the dinghy and went to shore for a walk with Reno to the mangrove swamp. It was a long walk and we got back to Karina around 1400. To celebrate the end of the 'Norther we are having spaghetti tonight.
I spent an unproductive afternoon trying to get Cathy's arcane tide program to work on our 64 bit computer. I will have to uninstall it and install the right one when I get to an internet connection.

On the road again!
We had a very peaceful night last night. At around 0300 I got up for a pee and realized the main halyard wasn't tightened down from launching the dinghy yesterday. I decided it could wait until the morning which cost me 30 minutes of sleep.
After listening to the nets this morning, we decided to head N. We are abeam of Nopolo and it looks like it was a good idea. The real downside of leaving today was saying goodbye to Cathy and Reno. In the brief time we have known Reno and Cathy, they have become very dear to us. Both are the kindest folks I could ever hope to meet. We miss them dearly already. We may have to alter our cruising plans to include them in future adventures. I think there is nothing wrong with staying down here until we're too old and then shipping the boat back to Canada. We get a lot of mileage out of Karina here in the winter.
It is 0950 and closing in on 80F here on the water. I've no idea of what is going to be on land today. We are so relieved the 'Norther is over and we are able to head north today.

Yesterday we motored up to Puerto Los Gatos (the Cats). There we hiked the colourful red rocks up to the cross on top of the hill. Anita was too wise to go all the way to the top. The top was a cornice, but I succeeded in making the return journey. It was very steep and a poorly chosen idea for a person nearing eternity, but what the heck. It`s either that or die in bed.
Last night we shared the anchorage with 3 other boats. This morning at 0530 we were up and getting ready to motor to Agua Verde (Green Water). There we met Bob and Giselle on Relax who were southbound to La Paz where they are going to lay the boat up for the summer. They have had it with fighting the 'Northers and want to do their cruising in warmer climates. We walked over to near where the caves are. We came back along the beach and made it to Karina C by 1530. There we put the dinghy back on the deck and got Karina ready for the 23 mile leg to Puerto Escondido tomorrow. The winds are very settled and we are enjoying a pleasant evening of feeding Anita's ego at Backgammon. We are looking forward to getting to Puerto Escondido as I am down to my last pair of gaunchies and Anita is down to her last pair of recycled socks. We are eating well as we found a good tienda today and bought enough produce to make it to Puerto Escondido. If we get going as planned we should be in town by 1000. I will spend the afternoon in the coffee shop surfing the net and Anita will spend the afternoon in the tienda. The owner of the store is an astute judge of the gringo tastes for food so tomorrow night promises to be a good meal.
As I have noted earlier, the saga of the thumping in the drive train has been dormant today. It is creepy that it happens on some days and not on others. I checked the motor mounts and found that some of the bolts were a little on the loose side. I tightened 7 of the 8 bolts. The last one ( the suspected offender) will have to wait for our arrival to Puerto Escondido as I need to clear the sail locker to do that. If that solves the problem, we will save a boat unit (Bring On Another Thousand) which will bring us a welcome end to this adventure.
From Puerto Escondido we are 24 hours from San Carlos. We will likely make it a lot slower by heading up to San Juanico, Santispac, Punta Chivato, and Santa Rosalia before making the last trip to San Carlos by leaving at 0 dark thirty and getting in sometime in the late afternoon. Once we get to San Carlos we will enter shutdown mode so that will bring a quick end to this year's holiday.
We are looking forward to seeing Kip and Mary again in Puerto Escondido. It looks like the weather will be nice for a few days and then turn sour next weekend when another 'Norther blows through. I'm sure it will be a lot shorter event than the last 2 week episode down in San Evaristo. After that event dissipates, we will head N again.
