Ode to Old Age

We made it back in time to do a little work on a project we have going in the back yard: a retaining wall. We have bought 4 palettes of bricks and we are about to lay them. We've hired a young man who is a very good worker and he has been ever so helpful. Today I (Jay) went to the ophthalmologist's office [...]

Out for a couple of weeks

In late June, Anita’s shoulder and my eye healed sufficiently to make a little journey on Karina C.

To Santispac

We laid over an extra day as we wanted one last chance to get together with Tom and Suzanne (Begone). We had a great jam session on Rhiannon (Eric + Mary) and made it back to Karina just as it was getting dark. I fed Anita's ego again by loosing at Backgammon.
This morning we were up at 0530 and were underway at 0545. We have had a relatively pleasant journey up the Conception peninsula. The only casualty was Anita cutting her knuckle as she was making soup. Knuckle soup seems to be a staple around here.
For a few minutes we had all sail up. At this point (1200) it is flat clam and we are motoring in calm conditions for Santispac. The cabin temperature is 85F. All is well.
Anita here,
I always feel so rich with my 'treasures' of fresh produce. Mary and Kip took us to the market in Loreto last Sunday, and we brought back so much stuff, that combined with the waves and fighting 25 knot winds in the anchorage, we almost swamped the dingy. Now with a few days behind us and a lack of refrigeration (Jay likes the sound of his own voice on every possible ham and side band net, chewing up all the electricity), my 'treasures', much to my horror, are starting to rot. Menu plan change. We got rid of the salad yesterday, and today it was soup day. Some of the yams needed tossing, but most were salvaged. With all the meat now gone, I thought the soup needed a little protein of knuckle. I've now moved my polysporin from the hard to reach medical bucket to the ever ready almost daily use spot, as I seem to be chopping a lot of extra finger protein on a regular basis. Jay never ceases to amaze me. As Karina seems to have one thing after another break, and I would be inclined to throw my hands in despair to say ship it home. Jay manages to figure out how to fix the problems, in a country, or anchorage, with no parts available. He finds a solution, to what I often think of as impossible. Definitely resourceful. I can count myself lucky to have such a smart guy.

However misguided my wife's opinion of my abilities, she is one damn good cook. The knuckle soup was superb! It is a warm evening here at Santispac. The trucks are using their jake brakes as they come down the hills so it is a little noisy. I finally won at backgammon. To compensate, I lost at cribbage. We will get an early night as we have been travelling all day.
The trip was mostly a motorboat ride with a few tantalizing exceptions of wind that didn't pan out. Most of the seas were rippled with the odd whitecap to lure us unto raising a sail on occasion.
We will stay here for a couple of days (maybe more). We want to stop in on Geary Richie the weather guru. Then we will head for Punta Santo Domingo where we will either head for the barn or Santa Rosalia and then the barn. There are a lot of Canadian boats here. If we could find someone with a bad attitude and a lazy disposition, we could open a Canadian Consulate.
It has cooled off to a chilly 85F at 2013 in the evening. We went ashore to inspect the shower facilities. This is a new low. The wasps have discovered the fresh water showers and the showers are covered in wasps. This makes the Berkovich's cockroach showers look glamorous. We will shower aboard Karina as we have lots of water.
