Ode to Old Age

We made it back in time to do a little work on a project we have going in the back yard: a retaining wall. We have bought 4 palettes of bricks and we are about to lay them. We've hired a young man who is a very good worker and he has been ever so helpful. Today I (Jay) went to the ophthalmologist's office [...]

In late June, Anita’s shoulder and my eye healed sufficiently to make a little journey on Karina C.

Getting a little better

04 December 2013 | Berkovich Marina - La Paz

The above picture is what was ground off the hull. To our shock, this is cheap polyester filler with 1 layer of roving over it. Not a good testimonial for the work of the boatyard that rebuilt the hull in 2001.

We've been at Berkovich Marine for 3 days. Things are looking up. Yesterday they ground the "owie" on Karinas keel. Looks like they will start work tomorrow on the repair. I have little good to say about the boatyard that did the rebuild on the hull. I thought they used glass all over. It seems clear that there is a lot of filler in that hull. I am indeed disappointed. Further, there is no answer when I call. This doesn't help my decision of what to replace the busted up material with similar material as they won't answer their phone.
The good news is that the outboard is very affordably fixed. I am happy with that.

Again, we enjoyed the amenities of Marina Costa Baja. We get pretty good internet as well as the pool, hot tub and showers.
Abel Berkovich has indicated that he will incorporate the suggestions of Malcolm as well as Rob Cross (who came by today to look at things). Karina should be back to her old self this time tomorrow or Friday. We should splash on Monday or Tuesday morning. Tomorrow we will stay around as tomorrow is "fibreglass day" for Karina. Abel said he is going to smooth it out with a special filler that is only available at his yard. Then, a few layers of mat and roving and then I will put on a few layers of epoxy and then bottom paint and we are good to go.
More good news:
Marina Palmira has agreed to take us for the rest of the winter. We are pleased as this will mean we can enjoy the amenities of the town for the rest of the winter. Sadly, we will be too far away to poach the Costa Lotta pool, but we will get by.
I have decided to keep Anita as crew as she is the only one who will put up with me. She was at the helm when we went into the rocks. But, she is so darn sexy. I couldn't find a better girl anywhere. Plus, she plays piano like an angel. Steering the boat? Well....
