Ode to Old Age

We made it back in time to do a little work on a project we have going in the back yard: a retaining wall. We have bought 4 palettes of bricks and we are about to lay them. We've hired a young man who is a very good worker and he has been ever so helpful. Today I (Jay) went to the ophthalmologist's office [...]

Out for a couple of weeks

In late June, Anita’s shoulder and my eye healed sufficiently to make a little journey on Karina C.

In La Paz

Jesus Saves!!!
Again, Jesus Salas came by and blessed Karina with the GFCI plugs that I bought at Home Depot. He also figured out some of the mysteries of the shore power system. If ever you are in San Carlos and looking for a good marine electrician or refrigeration guy, he is it. He is reasonably priced and good quality work. Shows up when he says. Very good quality work.
He replaced the plugs and redid some of the faulty butt connectors that the surveyor had found. All things being good, we are getting ready to head out Friday morning for Agua Verde, Isla San Francisco, and La Paz. We have 3.5 days of N winds and then we are back to fluky. So, we will try for one overnight passage to Agua Verde and then Day hops down to La Paz.

Karina is charging down the Sea at 6 knots. The wind is in the high teens - low twenties from the N. We are carrying a bit more sail than we should, but Karina is not complaining as the wind is on Karina's favourite point of sail (broad reach). Karina does bop around a bit in the chop though.
This is a bittersweet trip as it is the last overnight trip for a long time in our life with Karina. This is fine for Anita as she dreads night passages.
Had to stop and heave too.Reefed the main and got going again. Same speed, but now slewing around like a drunken sailor. The reef came out when I came back on shift as the wind eased a bit.

Just came on shift. Anita is tired. We are still blitzing along at 6 knots. Seas have settled down somewhat. No moon tonight. Should see Isla Carmen at first light. Had to put up the first 2 panels of the dodger on the starboard side as the splsh was making the cockpit a little wet. It is still a relatively warm evening as I am in sweatpants, T shirt and overshirt.
Anita was a little queazy this afternoon after her nap. I made supper (which she enjoyed immensely. We had rice, mushrooms and chicken. Pretty good if I do say so myself.

Isla San Francisco
This is our last night at anchor on this passage. I guess we will have one more night at anchor before we load Karina, but that won't really count. Today, we motored most of the way to Isla San Francisco. We were hopeful we might be to only ones here, but we are sharing this place with 7 others (at this point [1600]). We have a good spot here and the motion is easy.
others (at this point [1600]). We have a good spot here and the motion is easy.
On two occasions the motor didn't start right away. Jiggling the connection on the starter solenoid seems to do the trick. I'm gonna get in there with vice grips and squeeze the thing to the point where it is fused. Better still, I may solder it. Anita is good with doing the trick, so she has now expanded her role to mechanic. What a girl!!!
Last night we were closing on Agua Verde in the late afternoon and were surprised to hear Bob and Didi (Sunshine) in Agua Verde. We had a wonderful visit with them after supper. They are shipping Sevenstar one month after us. Bob gave me the lowdown on their protocols

We have been at Marina Costa Baja (AKA Marina Costa Lotta) for 3 days now. We grubbed up and have done a few things on Karina. Fortunately, the decommissioning for transport is not nearly as rigorous as for a summer in San Carlos. However, Karina must be prepared for bucking into a 40 knot gale at 20 knots. So the sails come down and the dodger comes off.
Taking the main off, I removed the battens as the sail was coming down. Unfortunately one fell overboard and, after a futile attempt to dive for it, hired a diver to go down and get it. He got it 3rd try.
There is still a flurry of paper flying back and forth between us and the shipping company. We are needing clarification on a number of questions that we are just vaguely aware of.
We motored S from Isla San Francisco in calm conditions. Soon a 10 knot headwind (Corumuel?) was slowing us down a half a knot. As we got closer to town the wind eased and we sped up. We contacted Marina Palmira. No room at the inn. Likewise with Marina De La Paz. Soooo....plan C was Marina Costa Lotta. It's a good choice as the heat here is withering after lunch. So we go to the pool.
