We started sailing together July 2005. Our 1st boat was Cygnet, a 26' Cottingham that we kept on The Columbia River, near Portland Oregon. In July of 2010 we purchased Jabiroo II, an Island Packet 35 and moored her in Olympia and enjoyed exploring Puget Sound and The Gulf Islands. [...]

Departing Oly

It has been three months since we left Olympia but rarely a day goes by that we don't think about our friends at Swantown Marina in Olympia. We have wonderful memories of sitting in our cockpit talking across the way to Phil and Kat in the cockpit of Pemiquid Light or chatting with Barbara Emmons as she walks by on her way to Sombre de Luna after a day of work and Ollie hoping aboard well before his owners David and Lang from Sapphire come into view.

We can't begin to explain how much our friends in Olympia meant to us, there is a unique kinship in a live-aboard community. Although the intimacy of the liveaboard lifestyle is common to marinas around the world, Swantown was our first experience and will be to what all others will be judged.

After 15 months living aboard Jabiroo II at Swantown Marina in Olympia, we had decided to head north and begin our cruising adventure. So it was with a heavy heart we picked Friday, August 2nd 2013 to be our last 'Happy Hour Friday' in Olympia.

'Happy Hour Friday' had become an important social event in the lives of not only the people who lived aboard their boats in Swantown Marina, but the great friends that moored their boats at Swantown, and lived nearby. All of our Oly friends dropped by and gave us a great bon voyage.

Debra Glasser of S/V Liberte wrote a very heartfelt reminiscence and it is included here:

On the Eve of the Epic Journey

Ginny and Stephan pulled into Swantown Marina less than a year ago in their beautiful sailing vessel Jabiroo II. As it turned out for us south sound sailors now being left in the home port, we were even more beautifully touched by this warm and welcoming sailor couple.
A dozen or two of us admiring friends and fellow sailors gathered appropriately at the picnic tables at the gate to C dock to potluck, visit and enjoy a lovely August evening to launch them on their journey. In their short time in Olympia, Washington they became an integral part of our south sound sailing community. Stephan played guitar and sang with our old time musicians on our group cruises as if he'd been with us for decades. Ginny hosted Friday night Happy Hours in her galley thru the winter, often when Stephan was away. They were so loving and welcoming and we easily fell in love with them.
Sadly for us and thrillingly for them, they shared that they are taking off for good, never to bring their vessel this far south into Puget Sound again. They are living many of our dreams and following the waterway not yet taken by many of us. That said and still knowing how way leads on to way, somehow I sense that this farewell is not forever. Somewhere in the sound as it is with the magic of Northwest cruising sailors I suspect we will meet once again.
